Comic Book Noise 204: The New Avengers Books
The New Avengers: I thought I would dislike this one the most. No particular reason, but it just didn’t seem like something I would like. However, I like “getting the team together” type stories. And I really like the make up of the actual team: Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Ms. Marvel, Jessica Jones, Hawkeye, Mockingbird, Wolverine, Spider-Man and The Thing (I think it would be a great scene to have the last three sitting around swapping stories about all of the team ups they have had in the past, but I think that would only appeal to a certain type of reader).
While I liked them all to varying degrees, I would say my favorite two are Avengers Academy and The New Avengers. I think that because I am not the world’s biggest Steve Rogers fan it comes as no surprise that I prefer the two books he is not a part of.
One thing I thought was really interesting was the first stories for each team. The intro/training of Avengers Academy is a pretty obvious thing to start out with, but the established teams are all in different types of story: Avengers/time travel, Secret Avengers/sci fi action, Avengers Prime/fantasy adventure, and The New Avengers/mystical threats.
Now that I have read all five of them, I can safely say that I will probably be picking up the titles in trade going forward.

I thought New Avengers #1 was a little redundant of the story they already did in New Avengers : the search for the sorcerer supreme.
But it's a good time to be an Avengers fan!

I'm not sure I'm ready to rank the four titles based on one issue yet (Avengers Prime doesn't count because it's a mini), but I'm impressed with Avengers Academy and New Avengers the most so far. Avengers doesn't have the snazzy art New Avengers has, plus I'm not thrilled with this new "development" regarding Simon Williams. With Secret Avengers… I don't know.
Of the titles mentiond, I saw three at my bookstore, bought two. 1st; The New Avengers….more Bendis diner talk doubling as so called drama. I think I've pretty much picked up my 1st and final issue of that comic. Decent art though.
Avengers Academy; So far, mildly entertaining, however I find myself not caring 4 the characters that much.
Which leaves Avengers, which is exactly what I did…leave it. Might be a gr8 story, but I detest JRjr's artwork, so I'll never know if I'm missing out on a good story until they change artists.
What did you think of McKone's artwork on Avengers Academy?
I read the first issue of the Sorcerer Supreme arc but left due to the art. With one issue in, I can't really say this is a repeat of that storyline. There, we had the search for Doctor Strange's replacement. Here, someone is after the Eye of Agamotto.
I thought it was decent, not mind blowing, but decent….although I most of what he does is okay. If I were a comics publisher, I'd have him in my stable. Not a superstar, but someone I could count on; also Ordway and Grummett.
