Five New Podcast Ideas
Posted on | September 7, 2010 | 4 Comments
Every now and then I like to challenge myself by coming up with new podcast ideas. Most of them are things I don’t do anything with like Social Network Noise, which would have been a look at websites like Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, etc. and TV Noise, which would have been me talking about the shows that I watch each week, upcoming shows I am looking forward to and shows that I have liked in the past.
There are shows that I develop realize I am not the right person for the job and pass them along to someone else, like The Incredible Hulkcast or The Number One Comic Book Show.
I come up with ideas for shows that I would love to see and say it very loud and often, like my repeated calls for a show about The Legion of Super-Heroes or Wonder Woman.
There are shows that I end up doing, like the unnamed Love & Rockets show or the upcoming still-untitled Grendel show. And shows that I start research for, but never actually get around to doing, like the Queen and Country podcast, the Milestone Universe podcast, or the Quantum and Woody podcast.
There are even shows I come up with that I have no intention on doing anything with, like Detroit Sports Noise, Daily Noise (a look some top news stories from the previous day) and a bunch of the others in my idea notebook.
However, there are times when I just want to come up with ideas for the thrill of coming up with ideas. It usually gets my creative juices flowing and I use that creative surge to improve my current podcasts. These are ideas that I throw out there for anyone to take and do something with.
Here is what I came up with this morning. Most, but not all, of them are comic book related:
1) A podcast about comic book crossovers. This has huge potential. Segments on the old Justice League/Justice Society annual crossovers, the Avengers/West Coast Avengers softball games, Batman and The Outsiders/The New Teen Titans immediate come to mind, but there is also space for Crisis On Infinite Earths, Civil War, DC vs Marvel/Marvel vs DC. Superman/Fantastic Four, Batman/Grendel, X-Men/WildCATS, Planetary/Authority, DC/Wildstorm: Dreamwar etc.
2) A podcast about imaginary stories in comic books. The Super Sons (Superman Jr and Batman Jr), the entire Elseworlds line, Fantastic Four: Big Town and DC/Wildstorm: Dreamwar, etc. You could even talk about the issue of The Question where he was reading Watchmen, or how Watchmen had pirate comic books as entertainment.
3) Making Noise, a podcast where each episode is about creating something. It could be how to write a comic book script or how to make a milkshake. This one might work better as a video podcast, but I’m not sure, I focus on audio. Shows about the actual creative process are something that I find fascinating.
4) Hidden Gems from the 90s. This podcast could talk about TV shows from the 90s that didn’t last long, songs from the 90s that didn’t reach the Top 40 or get significant airplay, comic books from the 90s that weren’t best sellers or even ones that people remember fondly, or movies from the 90s that didn’t make a huge box office impact. This one has the greatest crossover appeal potential.
5) You Know For Kids. This would be a podcast about comic books for children. This could be sort of like Comics Playground, but instead of looking for comics with an all ages appeal, this would be just for the kids. Comic books like Lil Archie, Scooby Doo and Tiny Titans. Right now there are podcasts that like to discuss children’s comic books, but the rest of the show isn’t necessarily kid friendly.
If you like any of these ideas, go for it. If not, then don’t be surprised if I do something with them.

For your Making Noise you can get something like it from Ninja Mountain Scrolls which you can find at http:ninjamopuntain.blogspot.com which is a group of artists who range from Comic Artists like Patrick McEvoy though to fantasy/Scifi artists who deal mainly with card companies like Wizards of the Coast and others.
Even from my non creative POV I like it and as they are talking about the industry from dealing with new companies to pricing your time to techniques they use.
You should give them a listen!

Have you ever thought about hosting a show with a revolving set of hosts? Not so much a group podcast but each episode would instead have one host who puts the show together. I could see something like the crossover show being hosted by different people talking about their favorite crossovers.

The revolving set of hosts idea is interesting, but to be completely honest with you, most of the ideas I have are for single host podcasts. Of course they can all be used for multi-host podcasts, but my original thoughts were for a single host. The only ones that I thought about for multiples were 2 People Talking (of course), Noise Talks (oc fourse), Comic Book Noise Talks (once again, of course), Milestone and Quantum & Woody (both with David A Price).
If you do any of those ideas, please let me know and I will promote it.
