It just doesn’t ring true to me in terms of the motivations and concerns of the heroes behind this event. On the one hand, he had been completely de-powered, which is how we have a Totally Awesome Hulk running around now (this also creates a continuity problem with Uncanny Avengers and Secret Empire, both resurrecting Banner to use his power as the Hulk), so I don’t see how anyone would be seeing him as a threat of any kind. On the other hand, he’s a founding Avenger and known hero. The last time anyone saw him “Hulk out”, it was where he was a member of the team in Avengers Tower (pre-Secret Wars) and saving human lives from a multi-megaton bomb (post-Secret Wars and how Amadeus Cho took his power). Even when he was a rampaging monster, heroes consistently balked at helping the military to kill the Hulk, choosing to instead help the jade giant or just let him go his merry way. In my world, there was absolutely zero reason people would 1) expect Banner to Hulk out or 2) be at all worried if he DID become the Hulk again. So while I understand the business decisions why this action was taken, the way they pulled it off will never stop bugging me.

Also, your comment about Marvel giving the Hulk the intelligence of Banner got me thinking. When Peter David “combined” his personalities in the early 90s (the Pantheon era), we had a Hulk who possessed all of Bruce Banner’s memories and was supposedly all of his personalities in one being, i.e. the “whole” Banner. David later revealed that this was actually just another of Banner’s many personalities, and this particular personality (dubbed “Professor” Hulk) wasn’t the SAME as Banner, but had full access to all of Banner’s thoughts and memories (and vice versa, Banner knows what the Professor knows), which is why he thought that he WAS Banner. Anywho, the reason this got me thinking is that now I’m wondering if we can attribute the Banner Hulk given to us by Bill Mantlo in the early 1980s to actually being this Professor personality. I’m inclined to think so, but would be open to discussion on the matter.

I miss the feels I got from these shows in the early days 9 of the 10 I was an avid listener to in the beginning when I was forming my listening habits.

I download way more than I can listen to, so I tend to listen to them in batches. I’m listening to shows right now that you recorded way back when DC relaunched the New 52, and I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy and appreciate your work and dedication to podcasting. It must be difficult to podcast on an almost daily basis even when you’re not in the best mood or the show isn’t perfect. It’s the most “real” podcast I’ve heard, and thanks for all your hard work!

In this ep, you gave credit to Hudlin for refocusing Black Panther and his nation as legitimate bad asses. I’m trying to recall if you’ve ever read Christopher Priest’s run – a new vol.1 trade is coming out in a few months of his run (most likely because of his movie appearance) – because for my money, it was Priest that elevated Panther and Wakanda and its supporting cast. Have you read that run? Thanks! – Peter

I see this as their way of softening the shock of people who do pick up the comics after seeing their movies. Add to that, a lot of their best artists and writers are already working on the Ultimate universe titles anyway. Just my opinion.

I only barely mentioned them on the site and show because I knew I would never attend the show, but still wanted to help. I also didn\’t follow what was going on too closely so the impression I got was one year they were friendly and the next podcasters were treated like a one night stand when the sun came up. Of course, now thinking back on the people doing most of the complaining, I should have known there was something off about their version of events.

About Reed/NYCC: CGS was one of the podcasts that helped promote the show for their first year in 2006. And then starting with the second year, they started giving podcasts tables to set up and have a presence. Which was great. But even by that second year, they definitely did not need podcasting to promote the show. They chose to work with podcasting because they understood the value of direct reach to listeners. Plus it was all new media at the time. And then they gave Podcasting a dedicated space for the third year – again for free – and for free for a few more years after that. They gave up valuable space at their con for podcasting. All in exchange for sponsorship. I can not fault Reed or NYCC for no longer having a podcasting presence. In the last few years, they charged podcasters for tables, but a super great discount.

For years they gave up prime real estate for us. Did all of the podcasts properly give them sponsorship? On their podcast and website and forums? Did those podcasts do interviews with creators who would appear at NYCC? Did they do interviews at the con? And also after? No podcaster should be annoyed with Reed no longer having a dedicated space. They did not have to do that – and I was surprised it took them this long to stop.

Keep in mind all the press passes that go out as well. They aren’t cheap. On CGS we did all kinds of things to promote NYCC before during and after. I can’t think of any other podcast that could do that much promotion – either because we had more people, more shows, more listeners – whatever. So if WE aren’t mad about NYCC stopping the podcast presence, really no one should be. Is that a little pretentious? Probably. Haha. I dunno – if someone is really speaking ill of Reed for that decision, after years of getting in for free and having a booth space, I think they aren’t really evaluating the tit for tat that went on.

Whew. That was more than I thought I would write. Haha.

Dharma didn’t alter the gas, but he knew what its effects would be, and manipulated events to make sure it was used, and created the Bang Babies.

Holocaust’s gang were the security for Utopiapark in the Long Hot Summer, and the Blood Syndicate basically turned up to start a riot in retribution for the park displacing the local Paris Island community.

Thanks for putting this out, though. Loving any Milestone reminiscing.

Alan Moore`s run was magnificent . You could`n t pay me to re-read Neil Gaiman`s run however. Moore`s Swamp Thing,on the other hand, shows how a really good writer can take a character everyone had beleved ran of steam years before and make it one of the greatest works of all time . Loved the mention of Matt Wagner`s early work . What did you think of Mage?

It is easier to listen to a conversation longer than it is a monologue, I suppose. I try to keep my own solo show in the 20-25 minutes range, if at all possible.

I guess my memory for comic books as they relate to covers isn’t as good as I thought.

The not being as much of an asshole thing came to mind as well, but I was such an asshole to him (specifically) that I don’t know if he would have been able to see past anything other than cold hard facts. Again, he had (has) good reason for that.

Not the start of reading comics, just my actively collecting a title. I picked March 1996, which cover dates may or so, and that just so happens to be Daredevil 362. An issue where a female successor to Arcade seduces Foggy which makes DD suspicious, so he goes to an amusement park and faces down a mock showing of Bullseye killing Elektra. I was drawn in by the cover and the issue was drawn well too, though a one off in the series, really. #363 started the Kesel/Nord run which cemented my love of the series, and I reread that run probably once a year, so I doubt I would have all that much trouble recalling anything for proof. That said looking at some Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2099 covers (series which I was getting less frequently) I would have been hopelessly lost, I think Peter David’s run on 2099 was coming to a close at that point, and so could have relatively closely predicted that.

I suppose I wouldn’t have had much trouble going back to freshman year, I am disabled and so I had a woman who helped me get from class to class, kept books, etc. So it wouldn’t have been too much of a nightmare, and I would have grown up enough not to be as much of an asshole as I usually was, so I might have even enjoyed the revisit. maybe.

Thanks for chiming in on this subject and for clarifying the Around Comics connection, I thought it was something like that, but wasn’t 100% sure.

Unfortunately for me, I like promoting other podcasts, so I will eventually get over this pissy fit and start promoting others again, because I guess I never learn. 😀

Great episode. I meant to comment on the previous ep that kicked off this dialogue. Glad it came up again. This might be long. But I’m putting here so you see it – and so others can as well. Learning a little true comics podcast history is always a good thing. 🙂

No one should have any issues with how you choose to run the CBNFamily from here on out. There are some big name podcasts who don’t even MENTION other podcasts. Those that do usually find out that it can be a case of “damned if you do, damned if you don’t”. CGS left the Comics Podcast Network early on after being smacked in the nose one too many times for doing nothing more than trying to grow the network. The Comic Forums were created soon after – and then I got emails from some CPN members asking “Why aren’t you promoting the CPN?”. Uhhmmm… really? Then there was the time I was scolded for only rebroadcasting those podcasts that were part of the overall Comic Forums and “ignoring” those not affiliated – even though I played podcast promos for other shows all the time. Heck – CGS got yelled at just a few months back by one of the more popular podcast hosts for not having him on as a guest in the early years. Eventually, you absolutely get a little more selective. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

Yes, you are correct: Around Comics spun out of Chicago based CGS listeners and/or forum posters having meet ups and drinking and talking about comics. They even recorded a bit of their conversation for a CGS episode.

And finally, to the lack of podcast community in recent days/months/years – I was really surprised and disappointed that no one stepped up to keep the community flame going when I left CGS. And this is something that I feel does indeed fall into the “bigger” shows’ laps. I was a big cheerleader for podcast community activities, helping to get panels at conventions, meet-ups, bringing hosts on for particular topics, etc. I’m not saying I was the only one, but I damn well will say I was one of the best at it. Why? Because I didn’t believe that CGS had to be the only voice out there. Not true of other “bigger” shows. So when I left, I could see the “kingdoms” starting to spread further and further apart. That’s too bad.

So now I’m happy helping promote shows that I listen to, that I like, that I feel are trying to do it differently, more personal or for the “right” reasons. I’ll always credit you and Bruce R. and other solo/duet led podcast hosts who helped pave the way. Because we don’t care about numbers, we don’t care about being friends with creators and talking to them all the time on Twitter or our podcast, we don’t care if we’re the biggest show. I care about comics and podcasting and comics podcasting and the listeners that choose to listen to my show. I’m proud of the fact that I know without a doubt that I could name more of my listeners over the years than those podcast hosts that only care about numbers and being friends with creators.

In the end – it’s your show. How you run it is your business. Others missed the boat when you were there with open arms. You snooze, you lose.

– Peter

PS/ So where can I send my podcast pitch? 😉

Comment on Comic Book Noise 315: Marvel’s Deal With Netflix by VichusSmith http://www.comicbooknoise.com/2013/11/07/comic-book-noise-315-marvels-deal-with-netflix/comment-page-1/#comment-44162 Mon, 16 Dec 2013 13:37:52 +0000 http://www.comicbooknoise.com/?p=6218#comment-44162 So were these very recent comments? Let’s look at the landscape now. CGS: CGS always had the largest number of hosts, but I think they’re at, what, half that now? Around Comics: Officially done. Augie DiBlieck: Does he do an audio podcast anymore?

The Comic Forums: It’s on it’s 4th version, I think, after those crashes. Who goes to forums now, anyway?

The landscape has changed. Maybe these people who have issues with the veteran shows throwing them a plug or a link should go to the second or third generation of podcasters, rather than the biggest, oldest, names. Shows like CGS are still going, but they’re long in the tooth. Pants, the guy laughing hardest and loudest, threw in the towel. I honestly don’t know how much longer the show has. Could be 100 more eps, could be 1000 more.

Comic News Insider is very old at this point. 11 O’Clock Comics is an offshoot/amalgamation of older podcasts, and its been on for years at this point. So I wonder why a young podcast can’t find ANY established podcast to forge a relationship with.

I don’t know if I’m making a coherent point here, but the “Good Ol’ Days” of podcasting is done. When the comedians and celebs started realizing that podcasting was cool, we’ve turned yet another corner. Now people are trying to figure out how to make a profit off of podcasts. Maybe people are trying to tap into a community that doesn’t really exist anymore. I compare it to the nature of internet communities. when comics podcasting started, it was still about forums. Now we’re at twitter, facebook, and tumblr: solo personalities occasionally intermingling.

The comments that I have been hearing have been more related to the lack of community between comic book podcasters and the fact that the veterans seem like an impenetrable clique. Since I can’t do anything but help promote other show, that was going to be my contribution.

No one gave Augie, CCL, or CGS a boost because there was no one else doing what they were doing. They didn’t start from square one, they WERE square one. Most of them helped promote newer podcasts and podcasters for a long time. I had subscribers in the single digits before Comic Book Noise was mentioned on CGS and the exposure I was given helped immensely. Jamie D said it wasn’t his cup of tea and Peter liked it. For years, CGS helped give podcasters space on their forums, which helped give a lot of newer podcasters exposure. There’s even an Around Comics/CGS Forums link, but I’m not quite sure what it is.

When I did a series of episodes promoting other shows (pre-Comic Book Podcast Show), I got a nasty email from someone who didn’t like the clip I used (that I got from their website) and said I probably did more harm to their show than good. So it happens. I also listen to every show I have ever gotten a clip used to promote other people’s podcasts for the reason you mentioned. Not every podcast is to my person tastes, but I know the difference between a good show and a bad one.

However, this last attempt at a CBPS has convinced me that I have been wasting my time on newer podcasters. Going forward, I will help promote my stuff and those of my friends. I don’t care if this helps solidify the accusations of cliquery at all. At least I know who I can count on.

The Video Game Podcast Show?? If I knew that was coming, I’d have my buddies send you a clip. They’d have to start in the middle of a conversation that makes no sense without context, though.

You know, I’ve been catching up with the podcast, and you keep mentioning these- I don’t know if they’re a mixture of various comments or it’s a specific podcast- comments about small shows needing a push from the established shows.

So I see so much wrong with that notion. First, who was there to give CGS or AC or Augie a boost? They started from square one and built a listenership. Second, who’s so butthurt over not having their free podcast promoted? So you want people who give up their free time to give some more time to promote your free podcast? Then I’m thinking “What if this podcast who’s dying for promotion isn’t all that good?”

To my knowledge, it hasn’t happened yet, but what if you promote some show, then it turns out that this new show just starts spouting slurs against a group. You put your stamp on something that turned bad.

Shows like CGS could promote every comics podcast out there, and it’s good for the vets to bring up the news. However, why does the newbie not have to scrape or struggle? This is why the older generation keeps screaming about those “damn kids.” What smaller, younger podcasts should be doing is looking up all the info available about how to better promote and podcast. A lot of the stumbling and experimenting has already been done for them, so getting better isn’t as difficult now.

Not only is it a coloring thing, but also a \”Not wanting to mess up the originals\” thing.

I liked the Gaiman/Buckingham run. NOTHING will ever compare to the Moore run, especially those issues with Totleben on the artwork, so I went in with the mindset that it would be different. I was still frustrated that it ended the way it ended and have been waiting for the next issue for decades.

If Marvel was smart, they would keep him separate. The Miracleman universe is drastically different than the Marvel or DC universes and it wouldn\’t make sense to try and shoehorn him in there.

I have the entire Moore run from Eclipse as well as most of the Warror Magazine issues.I still plan to get the Marvel reprints primarily to see the stories with better coloring.

I only have two or three issues of the Gaiman run but was not very impressed with his writing at that time.Maybe age will help me enjoy those stories more but anyone following Alan`s groundbreaking work will never seem quite as good.

One last question, how do you see Miracle Man fitting into the Marvel universe proper? Will they try to make him more like his pale imitation, The Sentry? Or will they try something totally different?
