Heroes Con artwork (not mine, but for me)

I had the pleasure of attending Heroes Con this year as I have the two previous years. The biggest difference this year versus past years was my focus on getting some original artwork from artists whose work I appreciate and sometimes even drool over. So I thought now that I have the blog, it would be the perfect forum to share my bounty…

Mr. Fixit by Tom Folwer

This commission I requested (and saw) in advance. At first, I wasn’t sure what to think of it since I was expecting a full figure drawing. However, after losing my preconceived notions and then seeing it in person, I couldn’t be more in love with it! Tom did a great job, and he did a sketch of Mysterius in my MYSTERIUS THE UNFATHOMABLE trade to boot!

Green Scar/Planet Hulk by Gabriel Hardman

This one I also had requested in advance of the con. I was so eager to pick it up that first day, but Gabriel told me that he needed some reference material which he managed to get the second day of the con.I’d say he came through BIG TIME with this awesome rendition of my favorite Hulk incarnation! He’s one of those artists who you almost hate to see his work colored over because it is so beautiful in black & white.

Captain Marvel vs. the Hulk by Mike Norton

I found Mike early on the first day of the con to get this commission. I knew exactly what I wanted since his work on Billy Batson & the Magic of Shazam has been stellar and brought me back to the title after Mike Kunkel’s departure. He gave me exactly what I was looking for in exactly the style I wanted. The color was an added surprise.

Hulk by Jonboy Meyers

I knew Jonboy’s work from the Fall of the Hulks: Savage She-Hulks limited series. After looking at his work and making random conversation about breakfast cereals and McDonald’s characters, I told him I hosted the Incredible Hulkcast and asked him how much for a sketch to which he replied he’d do it for free. After quickly finding a sketchbook, I told him I’d like a Hulk and he had this baby waiting for me the next day. I really hope he finds more work in an ongoing title because his work is excellent.

Pepe Muppet Show cover by Amy Mebberson

My one non-Hulk related sketch to share would be this one from Amy Mebberson on a limited edition blank cover Muppet Show comic book. Like Mike Norton, I knew I was going to seek Amy out for a Muppet-related sketch even befofre going to Heroes Con since her work on the Muppets has been my favorite thus far. She was only doing these covers, but that was fine with me. I fought the urge to get an Animal, who is my favorite, because I wanted to see something different from her so I instead picked Pepe, who is a very handsome king prawn, okay?
I didn’t want to sound like a broken record after each work so I’ll end by saying not only were all of these artists super-talented, they were also some of the nicest and most genuine people you’d hope to get the chance to meet. If you get the chance to go to Heroes Con (or any other con for that matter) make a point to seek out some artists whose work you enjoy, even if it is just to let them know (but I encourage you also to get yourself some one-of-a-kind artwork as well).
