I Hope The Ball Doesn’t Get Dropped…

…with the Milestone characters now that they are back from Publishing Limbo.

Static has always been pretty popular, but the rest of the big four Milestone characters might just be shunted off to the side.

Icon has been labelled as The Black Superman and this seeming redundancy causes him to get disregarded. (Even though Superboy, Superboy Prime, Supergirl, Captain Marvel, Black Adam, Mon-El/Valor/M’Onel and the whole planet of New Krypton don’t seem to have that problem).

Hardware has already made an appearance in The Brave and The Bold teaming up with Blue Beetle and even though he was the typical “angry black hero” who doesn’t want to team up with Jaime, at least he was being used. AND the issue hinted at what could possibly be a long term storyline for Hardware. Personally, I just want him to start a new company with John Henry Irons because I’m sick of Lexcorp stuff being everywhere.

Blood Syndicate isn’t technically one character, but they have almost always been treated as one monolithic entity and a lot of creators have rarely used just one or two of the individual members. Not to seem to glib about it, but I’m not even sure if most people are aware they have names.

Of course, the one Milestone character (outside of Static) who will probably get used in the DCU is the top Milestone villain (sorry Alva): Holocaust. Not only is he an angry black drug dealing gang banger with a secret middle class background but he has the added benefit of being offensive to a lot of the Jewish population.

Of course there are other characters, but these are the big ones.

Like I said, I just hope DC does a better job with the Milestone character than Marvel did with the Malibu characters.

Comic Book Noise 177: Marvel’s Marvelman

Host Derek Coward goes over a brief history of the Miracleman mess, discusses what he thinks Marvel should do with the character and tells Marvel in no uncertain terms what they can do to get his money.

Note: Despite what I said in the episode, it was Marv Wolfman who wrote Total Eclipse, not Chuck Dixon. And a bunch of people wrote Miracleman:Apocrypha including Kurt Busiek, Sarah E. Byam, Dick Foreman, Neil Gaiman, Steven Grant, Steve Moore, Stefan Petrucha, James Dale Robinson, Fred Schiller and the great Matt Wagner. Also the series went 24 issues, not 22, and the last issue came out in 1993.

Oops.

My latest purchase revealed

My mystery comic book finally arrived today from the Amazon Marketplace. Since I have it in my possession and I don’t have to worry about people rushing out to buy it (and therefore driving up the price for me to get it), I can finally make the big reveal.

It is JLA: Secret Origins by Paul Dini and Alex Ross, the only one of their oversized books that I didn’t own.

jla_secretorigins

I haven’t read it thoroughly yet, but I like what I have seen by just thumbing through it. It appears to be a collection of two page retellings of the origins stories of the Justice League of America (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Flash, Green Arrow (with Black Canary, but her origin wasn’t told.),  Captain Marvel (the real one, you know “Shazam!”), Hawkman (and Hawkgirl, whose origin has always been intrinsically tied to her husband’s), Atom, Plastic Man,  Martian Manhunter and Green Lantern Hal Jordan.

Since I cut my teeth on DC Comics way back when, there  is nothing in here that I didn’t already know but it never looked like this.  There is also a retelling of the Justice League of America themselves, which is restricted to one paragraph. The real treat on the JLA spread is Adam Strange, Zatanna, Metamorpho, The Elongated Man, Phantom Stranger and Red Tornado each getting the Alex Ross treatment for a panel.

After the story, there is an interview with Dini and Ross that includes a lot of sketches and a painting of the Big Seven, which is beautiful and I wish I had a poster of it.

Now my Dini/Ross oversized collection is complete and I can start getting some of the other books that I saw on TreasuryComics.com. This could take a while and get expensive. Luckily for me, I’m not as obsessive about such things as I once was.

Comic Book Noise 148: Hate vs Disappointment

Host Derek Coward explains why being disenfranchisement and disappointment is not the same as hate. To make his point, he mentions Batman, Superman, Captain Marvel, Prime, dating a female bodybuilder, Batman: Prodigal, Az-bats, Batman: RIP, dead Steve Rogers, dead Superman, blonde Wonder Woman, black Iron Man, gray Hulk, puzzle pieces, taking the audience for granted, podcast recipes, scripted material and stilted dialog versus satisfying spontaneity, referencing the hidden past, real competition, what are you buying this week, expanding pull lists, Andrew Kreisberg and Helen Killer, a sixty percent failure rate, Invasion, Animal Man, Doom Patrol and why lean does not mean sickly.

PENCILS: BRENT ANDERSON, JOHN BYRNE, and DAVE COCKRUM
The X-Men return for another milestone Marvel Masterworks of beginnings, endings and maybe even the beginning of the end! Chris Claremont and John Byrne raised a rag-tag group of mutants from a burning ember to an all-out firestorm that topped the world of comics. And they’ll ride out that flame with one of the most influential X-Men stories of all — “Days of Future Past!” Feared, hated and now on the road to extinction, Marvel’s Children of the Atom face a bleak future of mutant concentration camps and a world where heroes are a thing of days gone past. Only by leaping back through time can Kitty Pryde’s future self hope to stop the events that created this dystopian nightmare!
Claremont and Byrne close out their classic run together with a fan-favorite Kitty Pryde holiday tale, but things only pick up from there with the return of the man who first delineated the all-new, all-different X-Men — Dave Cockrum!
Cockrum and Claremont put their team in a slow-pressure cooker with Arcade, Dr. Doom, Garokk and then blows its top with the return of Magneto in a double-sized anniversary extravaganza! Featuring guest-appearances by Spider-Woman, Dazzler, not to mention the debut of Mystique’s Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, there’s no question this one’s for the ages! Collecting X-MEN #141 and UNCANNY X-MEN #142-150.
