What I would buy – 8/13/2008

August 12th, 2008 by Derek | No Comments | Filed in Commentary

If I had money to buy comic books on August 13, 2008, this is what I would buy:

Arcana Studios:
Helen Killer 4 (of 4):  I have really enjoyed the first three issues of this miniseries and I think the last one will be just as special.

DC Comics:
Checkmate 29:  This title is being canceled, which should have happened once Greg Rucka left the book.  I decided to give Bruce Jones a chance because I liked his run on Hulk.  His Hulk was a superhero spy story in what was a superhero monster book.  His Checkmate is a superhero monster story in what should be a superhero spy book.  One day I hope he gets the formula right.  I’m getting this because I want to see how this storyarc ends.

Desperado Publishing:
Necessary Evil 7:  I like this book.  I think the premise is pretty good, but I am starting to get sick of the whole ‘good guy superheroes are really dickheads in costume’ vibe coming from a lot of books/movies/tv shows/extremely popular web events from big name creators.  It gets tiresome after a while, no matter how good the project is.  Pretty soon, a bad or even extremely mediocre project going to come out and make this entire subgenre look shabby.  Note to creators:  It is possible to make a sympathetic villain without resorting to making a douchebag hero.

Image:
Golly 1:  On Indie Comic Book Noise, I couldn’t remember what Golly is.  It turns out that it is the new project from Phil Hester and Ande Parks.  I would pick it up because those two usually do pretty good work, but I am little concerned about the lack of buzz behind the book.

Transhuman 3 (of 4):  On Awesomed by Comics, Evie mentioned the sameness in all of Jonathan Hickman’s projects.  I agree that there are definite similarities from one project to the next in terms of presentation and theme, but so far it works.  Check out the ABC podcast, good stuff.

Marvel:
Secret Invasion: Inhumans 1 (of 4):  I have already read the preview of this book and yet I would still buy it.  Does this mean that it is a great start to a potentially great miniseries, a sign of me being an Inhumans mark or evidence that despite the quality of digital comics there is still something a lot more satisfying with owning the hardware of a comic book?  The answer I was looking for was a little of all three.  Thanks for playing.

Secret Invasion: X-Men 1 (of 4):  See the comments for Secret Invasion Inhumans, but replace “an Inhumans mark” with “interested in what the mutants are doing during this time”.

Red 5 Comics:
Atomic Robo Dogs of War 1 (of 5):  OK, I am going to cheat again and say see the comments for Secret Invasion Inhumans, but replace “Inhumans mark” with “Atomic Robo mark”.  Seriously, Heath Holland from the Geek Brunch podcast does a review of this issue for Indie Comic Book Noise 210 that got me excited to read the issue, even though I had already read it.

Thanks to Charles LePage’s ComicList for the list of the week’s new releases.
